Neck pain is a sore point for a lot of people. If you're one of the 70 per cent of people estimated to suffer from neck pain, then you'll know there's no quick fix. However, in addition to light exercise, medication and therapy, you can help ease neck pain in your sleep. Here a few simple tips we've learned from the guys at Harvard Medical School:
1. Feathers are your friend
If you’re sleeping on a stiff pillow, swap it for a one made with feathers. Feather pillows are soft and supportive and conforms to your natural shape. A stiff or high sleeping surface can result in a stiff neck by keeping your neck muscles tensed during the night.
2. Don’t forget memory foam
Alternatively, you could try a pillow made with memory foam. Just like its name suggests, memory foam moulds to your body, and when not in use, returns to its original shape. It works to relieve pressure from your head and neck, and increase blood flow.
3. Position yourself well
If you experience neck pain, sleeping on your side or back will help by keeping your spine naturally aligned during the night. To make these positions work for you, pair sleeping on your back with a rounded pillow to support the curve in your neck, and a flatter pillow for your head; if sleeping on your side, find a pillow that is higher under your neck than your head, so your spine remains straight.
4. Travel pillows aren’t only for the plane
If you watch tv or read in bed before you doze off using a u-shaped pillow will keep your neck well supported and stop your head from tilting to the side which can often result in soreness.
